Second Grade
Meet our teachers
Second grade explores many exciting Core Knowledge units in science and social studies. In science we cover many types of life cycles, seasons, water cycle, insects, the human body, magnetism, and simple machines. In social studies we cover world history and geography, civilization in Asia, ancient Greece, our Constitution, The War of 1812, westward expansion, Civil War, civil rights, and immigration. We work with addition and subtraction of single and double digit numbers. We learn the concept of money and time. We learn measurement and geometry. We focus on narrative and expository writing formed with the writing process. We spend a lot of time expanding our paragraph with complete sentences, topic sentences, correct grammar usage and punctuation, and detail and conclusion sentences. Our reading series takes us through many exciting stories of all genres. As we read these stories we learn many important grammar skills.
