The Facilty
OCES was established as a municipal Charter school opening in 2005. We have 32 classrooms, a media center, cafeteria, administrative area and share a gymnasium.
Students enjoy a K-1 playground area and a 2-5 playground. OCES was built for 600 students grades K-5. All classrooms are fully equipped with Smart Boards, computers, document cameras and projectors. A first class security system with cameras and student check-in help us maintain a safe, positive and caring learning environment.
The Staff
Our staff are all certified to teach, and many have master's degrees. Their bios will attest to the fine colleges that they have attended for their education. The staff are loving and caring, and treat each child with dignity and respect.
Curriculum
The school uses a combination of the Core Knowledge Curriculum (http://www.coreknowledge.org/CK/about/index.htm) and local curriculum in order to give students the best education. For reading, we use the McGraw-Hill “Treasures” basal series, along with Spalding Phonics, Accelerated Reader, and Guided Reading strategies. The math curriculum is standards based with flexible grouping. Each grade level holds Core Knowledge events after units of study. Activities include: A Night at the Museum, Toga Night, China Studies, Pioneer Day, Cinco de Mayo celebration, Continent Day and Holiday celebrations.
Parent Involvement:
It is a requirement that each family spend 30 hours of parent involvement time at our school during the year. Research clearly shows that when parents value and support education, the children achieve at a higher rate. We have a multitude of opportunities to become involved, as this school is a family-oriented school with fun activities at school throughout the year.
School Grade:
The State of Florida gives its schools a grade each year, using the results of the FCAT (Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test) and other data. For the past three years, OCES has received the highest grade of A.
Technology:
The school has the latest in technology, including 5 networked computers in each classroom; a Smartboard (77” interactive white board computer) in each class along with a digital doc-u-cam that projects anything placed under it onto the Smartboard); and SMART Senteo remotes that students “click” when answering a question giving the teacher immediate feedback that can be graphed on the Smartboards.
Uniforms:
Our school believes that students need to dress for success, just like their parents dress up for their work. Our uniforms are easy on the budget, and consist of black, white, gold and yellow polo shirts with our school logo (Shirts can be purchased from a variety of local Cape Coral vendors), and khaki or navy bottoms in a variety of styles that can be purchased at any store.
Activities
OCES holds a wide variety of wonderful activities. We have a very active P.T.O. who sponsors many great events and does our fundraising. Several clubs are sponsored at the school- Odyssey of the Mind, K-Kids, Math Club, Reading Club, Fitness Club and Chess Club are but a few. The Media Center sponsors bimonthly family reading nights which offer families a great time to read and spend fun time together. We celebrate monthly holidays and celebrate our volunteers each year with fun activities.
